Why Study at The Open University

By Helena Mason

I am currently in year 4 of a 6 year degree course with The Open University and would like to recommend anyone wondering whether to take this step to go ahead and do it! Many other students that I have contact with report the same - it seems The Open University is extremely well thought of by its students. But what makes The Open University so good?

It’s ‘open’ to all

You do not need any previous qualifications to enrol onto a course with The Open University, and there are many short taster courses for people that have been out of education for a while.

You get amazing support throughout your studies

The support is fantastic. I have had several tutors for various course and every single one of them has been committed and helpful. I have spoken to various administration staff and computer helpdesk staff, and have found the same.

The courses are inspiring

All of the courses I have done have had sections that I have been dreading, and all of them have turned out to be brilliant. I went from positively asserting that I ‘hate poetry’, to absolutely falling in love with Percy Shelley in the space of a month.

The courses are challenging, but lots of fun

The Open University Courses are harder than I expected, but my guess is that they are making sure thatr no-one sees an Open University degree as an easy option. However, the fact that the work is so interested and the tutors are so enthusiastic is really motivating, and I personally have found that I have achieved far more than I thought I would be able to

It’s flexible learning

You can do the courses at your own pace, in you own time. I always try to race ahead so that delays caused by my children being ill, last minute family emergencies or general unforeseen laziness on my part don’t cause too many problems.

You’ll ‘meet’ like-minded people

There are active forums for the courses in which students can freely discuss the course, or anything else (within reason!). Most courses offer regular, non-compulsory tutorials too, so you may even make some new friends.

Above all though, The Open University offers people the chance to continue to learn throughout their whole lives. It really is a fabulous institution - one we should be proud of. So what are you waiting for? Sign up today!

Wow, this is your 3rd hub published today! The concept of the Open University is excellent. Everyone should have access to furthering their education and the Open University sounds like an excellent option for many. Life-long learning is a wonderful thing and to hear your excitement about learning is awesome. If all of my students over the years that I taught had the enthusiasm that you show, Helena, my job would have been even more rewarding than it was. Best of luck in your studies and keep that flame burning. Voted up and interesting!

I only wish I'd had this enthusiasm when I was younger - then I woudn't be having to fit study around the needs of my family.

Thanks for your vote x
